Tucked away in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains halfway between Sydney and Melbourne, Tumbarumba is one of New South Wales’ newest and most exciting wine regions.

Spectacular mountainous landscapes, open green pastures and rugged Australian bushland set the scene for a remarkably unique wine region.

Considered a relative newcomer in NSW as a wine region, Tumbarumba’s first vineyards were established in 1982. Since that time the region has flourished and approximately 300 hectares are now planted to vines, becoming particularly known for producing premium sparkling wines, as well as cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay table wines.

The alpine location of the region provides a unique environment for vine growth in the ordinarily warm and flat Australian landscape. The elevation of the wine region reaches as high as 842m and the resulting crisp mountain air means that Tumbarumba is the coolest climate wine region in NSW, even receiving snow in the colder months. However there are also long hours of sunshine to counter the chill, producing an interestingly conflicted environment for vine growth.

The extremities of these conditions can mean that vine growth is susceptible to damage in the colder months. However with good vine management and specific site selection the impact of these influences can be minimised and even harnessed for the benefit of flavour. The stature of the wines coming out of the region and the awards being bestowed on many of the McWilliam’s wines are testament to this.


Set among the foothill of the Snowy Mountains Tumbarumba is the coolest-climate region in New South Wales. This means that site selection and vine management are critical factors in the winemaking process.
