McWilliam’s Wines has reaffirmed its place among the great names in Australian winemaking, taking out Best Australian Wine of Show at the 2025 Japan Wine Challenge, Asia’s most influential wine competition.

Among more than 1,000 entries from 17 countries, McWilliam’s stood out as one of only two Australian producers to win a Trophy, reinforcing its reputation for crafting Australia’s most exceptional fortified wines.

The standout performer was the Hanwood Estate 20-Year-Old Rare Tawny, which claimed two trophies:

  • Best Fortified Wine / New World Fortified Wine
  • Best Value Fortified Wine (Above ¥5,000)

In addition to these accolades, McWilliam’s was also awarded the coveted Best Australian Wine of Show, further cementing its dominance in the fortified category.

“These awards highlight the craftsmanship and passion behind McWilliam’s fortified portfolio,” said Carrah Lymer, Brand Manager for McWilliam’s Wines. “To be recognised on an international platform is an incredible honour and a proud moment for everyone behind this wine.”

For more than 145 years, McWilliam’s has been synonymous with fortified winemaking in Australia, a craft defined by patience and precision. Fortified wines have long been at the heart of McWilliam’s story, representing a legacy of craftsmanship that continues to this day.

McWilliam’s Hanwood cellar holds one of the most extensive reserves of aged fortified material in the country, a living archive of Australia’s winemaking history and a testament to their enduring commitment to excellence.

“Fortified wines are a cornerstone of McWilliam’s,” added Lymer. “This recognition reinforces the importance of preserving our rich heritage while continuing to innovate the category for future consumers.”

Adding to its success, McWilliam’s Hanwood Estate 20 Year Old Tawny was also awarded Best Fortified of Show at the 2025 NSW Wine Awards, marking the second consecutive year McWilliam’s has received this prestigious title.
