What a wonderful record McWilliam’s Wines have had at Hanwood over the past 100 years, and as a fifth generation family member I am very proud of what our forbearers set out to achieve and the current result.

We are one of the very few families to still be operating a business on one of the original farms allocated in August 1913, at the very beginning of the Griffith region in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area.

Wines from the Hanwood vineyard and winery have created a very rich legacy for quality which has been widely recognised, both nationally and internationally. This includes being named the most successful exhibitor at over 30 capital city wine shows, a title bestowed 18 years consecutively at the Sydney Royal Wine Show.

To celebrate the Hanwood centenary we developed this historical booklet as tribute to those family members who put in the initial hard work and established the Hanwood vineyards and winery, John James (J.J.) , Jack (LJR) and Glen (GM) McWilliam.

The Hanwood Centenary Reunion – 10/11 August 2013

We had a great reunion of over 160 descendants of J.J. McWilliam at a dinner in the barrel store area of the premium cellar. At the dinner, we released the two Vintage Ports especially made from this 2013 vintage to honour both Jack and Glen, the 2 sons of J.J. who helped establish and develop Hanwood over the period of its centenary. These wines will be available only from the Hanwood Cellar Door in a special 2 bottle wooden gift box.

On the Sunday, we had a BBQ lunch at the Griffith Pioneer park museum for around 300 family members, winery staff and growers who supply Hanwood with grapes each vintage.

The 13 grand children of J.J. McWilliam who were present took part in the unveiling of a plaque honouring J.J. as the founder of the local wine industry, through his establishment of Hanwood Estate 100 years ago.

Then followed the official opening of the Wine and Irrigation museum by representatives of Griffith City Council, Murrumbidgee Irrigation, Wine Grapes Marketing Board and McWilliam’s Wines.
