Nothing complements a delicious pizza quite like a refreshing glass of wine. If you’re looking for the perfect pizza and wine pairing, it’s all about selecting flavours which combine effortlessly. Here are our some of our favourite combinations to indulge with tonight.

Wine and Pizza pairing

Pinot Noir and Cheese Pizza

Since a cheese pizza isn’t as strongly-flavoured as pepperoni or peri peri chicken, pair it with a light and fruity red wine. A Pinot Noir works beautifully. The flavours of the wine match the fruity tomato sauce, and it has just enough acid to cut through the oil.

Syrah and Pepperoni Pizza

Pepperoni is a strong flavour including a variety of spices. You’ll need a spicy wine with intense flavours to counterbalance ‘the pepperoni effect’. Syrah is a great choice as a medium bodied wine with intense flavour, and Shiraz as a similar alternative. Their signature flavour profiles of black pepper and currant will match beautifully with pepperoni, making it perfect for washing down slice after slice.

Chardonnay and Veggie Pizza

On the other end of the pizza spectrum lies the quieter vegetable-focused pizza. Try one with sun-dried tomatoes, capers, basil, spinach, goat’s cheese and olive oil, which goes well with Chardonnay. A dry Rosé wine would also perform well with all of the competing components of flavour.

Wine pairings for your favourite pizza

Pinot Grigio and Margherita Pizza

A subtle Margherita pizza would be overpowered by a huge Cabernet Sauvignon but not by a lighter Pinot Grigio. With its aromatic notes of fresh basil and the use of other lightly flavoured fresh ingredients (tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella), a Pinot Grigio is the perfect Margherita pizza wine pairing.  The light herbaceous character will highlight the basil and not overwhelm the mozzarella.

Sauvignon Blanc and Hawaiian Pizza

The most striking characteristic of Hawaiian pizza, regarding taste is of course the sweetness of the pineapple. The acidity in Sauvignon Blanc acts as a palate cleanser and the sweetness will elevate your ham pineapple experience to a new level.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Meat Lovers Pizza

If your pizza is also piled with meat, like a classic sausage, pepperoni, mushroom – go with a more formidable red, such as a cool climate Cabernet Sauvignon. Heartier red wines will handle the meat mega dose, neither will overwhelm the other.
