McWilliam’s Wines is very pleased to announce that Bryan Currie has been appointed to the position of Senior Winemaker at Hanwood Estate.
Bryan began his working career as a palaeontologist, before diverting to his other passion of wine, working in vineyards and as a McWilliam’s cellarhand before becoming a winemaker.
Bryan returns to the McWilliam’s team after a spell at Westend Estate, where he was winemaker since 2001.
“I am excited to return to McWilliam’s after twelve years gaining experience and developing my skills,” says Bryan. “The opportunity to join a winemaking team who are committed to premium winemaking is fantastic and I can’t wait to get stuck in and become involved.”
In his time at Westend he built a formidable reputation as a talented and savvy winemaker, nominated last year by the Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine for “Winemaker of the Year”, the only NSW winemaker nominated.
Bryan says that he is particularly proud of the role he played in developing their size and stature as a winery.
“As Chief Winemaker at Westend I was able to lead the company from a very small single region producer to a company which is now 10 times larger, with an award winning and acclaimed multi-regional wine portfolio.”
Bryan was also a scholar at the prestigious Len Evans Tutorial in 2007 and was selected by the wine industry as a “Future Leader” in 2009.
He has been a wine show judge since 2003 at a wide range of shows throughout Australia, including the 2011 National Wine Show in Canberra and the 2013 Sydney International Wine Competition.
McWilliam’s Chief Winemaker Jim Chatto says that he is very excited to have Bryan on board:
“Bryan brings new energy to our dynamic winemaking team. His depth of experience and leadership across the NSW vinous landscape is admirable.”
Bryan says that he is most looking forward to building on the reputation of McWilliam’s as one of the oldest and most celebrated wine producers in Australia.
“I have always had enormous respect for McWilliam’s and what has been achieved by the company and the staff… McWilliam’s is a very special wine company due to its long and continuous history of premium winemaking. To be part of the history and to hopefully add and strengthen McWilliams reputation is what I’m really focussing on.”
From the whole McWilliam’s team, congratulations on your appointment Bryan!
