Inspired by the iconic stories of the McWilliam’s family throughout the decades and grown from the rich soils of NSW, our new range Off The Press portrays one family’s passion for the art of winemaking.
Glen McWilliam, pictured, was one of four sons of J.J. McWilliam. Glen’s vision and tenacity in transforming the Riverina into a well-known winemaking region was a driving force behind McWilliam’s for over fifty years. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Glen continued to work with his family to grow the McWilliam’s name. He introduced a number of new grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay and Traminer to the Riverina. This Cabernet Sauvignon, just like Glen McWilliam, is bold and full of character. Rich with the distinctive aromas of blackcurrant, blood plums and lingering mint encourage you to explore the wine further. A palate of cassis and black cherry with subtle vanilla and brown spices are enhanced by the nine months spent on French oak leading to a well-integrated finish with fine tannins.
Front and centre of this label’s image is J.J. McWilliam, the founder of McWilliam’s Hanwood Estate. In 1913, J.J. and his eldest son Jack arrived in the Griffith district, carrying 50,000 vine cuttings. This pioneering decision lead to the McWilliam’s Hanwood Estate winery being commissioned in February 1917 with the first vintage processing 170 tonnes. A tribute to J.J’s innovative vision, this Shiraz Tempranillo is complex with vibrant aromas of red cherries, plums and expresso coffee. A distinctive palate of Shiraz is well rounded by the savoury, spicy addition of the Tempranillo to produce a complex and structured wine with supple tannins.
As many McWilliam’s family members have enjoyed before them, pictured in this label’s image is McWilliam’s brothers Jack (LJR), Doug and Keith enjoying a glass of McWilliam’s wine. During the mid-1900s, the three brother’s contributed to the expansion the McWilliam’s family business into one of the state’s leading producers. This Shiraz, in honour of the brother’s passion, shows luscious dark red fruit character of plums, dark cherry with a touch of mulberry continue to a generous and juicy mouth fill. Aged for nine months in premium American oak, soft tannins and a touch of vanilla round out the finish.
